Pre match

(L) Keith Johnson – Maverley/Hughenden FC -- Andrew Williams –Bull Bay FC

Coach Andrew Williams of Bull Bay said his team had come to claim all three points in the game; they did some work on passing during the week and is expected to play total football. In his view, since Maverley is one of the weaker teams in the competition, his team should play without pressure, play good football and win as they prepare for the next season.

Coach Keith Johnson of Maverley was not available due to the fact that the homesters were not organized and certainly not ready when the referee called the teams to the line.

Warm Up

Bull Bay was the only team that did some warm up on the day .They spent some 18 minutes mostly on dynamic exercise as well as multidirectional movements; unfortunately they concluded with six minutes of static stretching!

The home boys were busy sorting themselves out so they were not able to warm up before the game. However as some of their players walked on the field, they began to stretch while they were very dry. Now, even if they were not planning to stay in the super league for the next season, there was no reason to stretch when cold.

Two Cellar Dwellers

The game started seven minutes late due to the late arrival of the police. However, as the whistle went, Bull Bay immediately started to put some passes together and proved that coach Williams’ work during the week could turned out to be very useful for them . In the meantime, the underprepared Maverley Hughenden team seemed to use the time on the field to get warm as well as to get organized. It wasn’t surprising therefore to see that Bull Bay started the scoring as in the 16th minute, Maverley defenders failed to clear a ball coming from the left side of the field and provided Bull Bay’s Bevill Grossett with the opportunity to strike home a power house which the Maverley custodian could not handle properly. Kryshon Dryden equalized in the 29th minute from a goal mouth melee when Bull Bay’s goalkeeper came to intercept a high ball coming from the deep and failed to make contact from an ill timed unnecessary high jump supported by the usual high boots even then the ball was so hard to that it was first kicked on the upright and with a feeble effort ended up in the Bull Bay’s net.

Energy from the Equalizer

The home supporters sensing that three points were very much in their grasp began to encourage their team who despite the support were not able to respond positively to them. Chances came for both teams to take the lead in the remaining minutes but faulty shooting let them down and the first half came to an end with Bull Bay holding the advantage with more possession.

The second half started with much expectation from the home supporters yearning for a win which could take them closer to other teams in the cellar. However, the continued individual effort by Maverley appeared to draw the visitors into playing the game they wanted hence Bull Bay opted to suspend the team game they played in the first half and started playing the long deep passes and hoped for one to score. Well hope did turn in their favour as the game petered out into what was heading for a draw until in the 81st minute Sheldon Madden ran on to a threaded pass and slot the ball on the ground pass the oncoming keeper to give bull Bay the lead for the second and final time in the game, When the final whistle blew. The homesters were left pondering their fate for the next season.

Post Match

The happy Andrew Williams said that his team played the better football on the day and deserved to win. “We passed the ball very well in the first half but with fatigue stepping in we did not do the same in the second half”. In expressing the view that his team was the fitter team, he said that this condition will help them to play better in their preparation for the next season.

On the other hand, Keith Johnson said that his team was not as disciplined and they will have to decide what they want to do next season. He said that they still have an outside chance to play the super League next season but the leaders and the players will have to do better quickly.

Fact or Science Sometimes Lags Behind Effectiveness

In 1969 when Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins visited the moon, some 40 years later many still don’t believe that man can in fact reach the moon. The fact that a team win a league doesn’t negate the fact that science have proven that static stretching reduces muscle strength for up to 60 minutes after the stretching, so if a team wins they were not exempted from the muscle strength reduction. What I can say is that they won even though they could be more efficient and effective if they did dynamic stretching.

Team football requires training, and sometimes many hours on the training field to get the result you need, but it is possible. Google is at almost everybody finger tips, therefore any information that is in doubt can be queried, to sit back and wonder or even worst to hold onto the fact that I did this 10, 20, 30 of 40 years ago and win a cup so I can’t see why these guys shouldn’t do the same is like asking a youngster not to take the bus and walk two or three miles to school
