Leaders UWI and Central
Kingston clash in possible Claro Major League title decider
Leaders the University of the West Indies (UWI) and
second-placed Central Kingston clash in a top-of-the-table Claro
KSAFA Major League encounter at the UWI Bowl at 3:30 pm in what
could be a title decider in the penultimate round.
UWI assumed sole leadership on
Wednesday after dispatching Olympic Gardens 4-2 in a rescheduled
match and moved to 41 points, one more than long time leader
Central Kingston on 40 points.
Had this been the final round
the setting would be like a cup final, and it is still expected
to be although the title race is not confined to these two teams
alone as both Rockfort on 39 points and Police nationals on 37
are very much in the thick of things.
In their first encounter,
Central Kingston emerged 2-1 winners and should be confident of
repeating that performance but will find UWI a different
proposition on Saturday.
UWI have rattled up an
impressive eight game winning streak that including an emphatic
3-0 win over title contender Rockfort last week Saturday and are
bubbling with confidence.
Based on current form, UWI start as favourites to win and
seven-goal hero Andre Bernal along with Jeffrey Brown (6),
Anthony Grant (4), Mickail Hewitt (3) and Oneil Fairweather (3)
are expected to lead UWI’s hopes.
In the mean time third and
fourth-placed teams Rockfort and Police Nationals will be hoping
that both UWI and Central Kingston lose in the but that will not
happen. Therefore their best bet is a draw.
If that game ends in a draw
then Rockfort will be hoping to beat fifth-placed Greenwich Town
and move to 42 points which would put them along side UWI at the
summit.
Police National ob 37 points has two relatively easy games to
conclude their season but they must first beat eighth-placed
Liguanea United on 24 points.
Police will then have
seventh-placed Whitfield Town next Saturday and will be hoping
to finish on 43 points and hope that other results go in their
favour.
All in all, the Claro KSAFA
Major League look set to go to the wire in another intriguing
season of football.
