March 15th, 2010

UWI vs Central Kingston

The Claro Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Major League remained wide open after the top two teams UWI and Central Kingston battled to a 1-1 draw which allowed Police National to close the gap to two points in third spot.

In what has turned into a four team race on the penultimate round, only three points separate the top four teams with fourth-placed Rockfort having a game in hand and the ascendency.

Leader UWI had to come from behind for a share of the points after Ricardo Rowe gave Central Kingston a third minute lead. But Andre Bernal equalized in the 29th minute for his 10th goal of the season.

UWI remained on top with 42 points while Central Kingston stayed second on 41 points.

At Jamaica College, the visiting Police National blanked Liguanea United 2-0 to jump into third spot on 40 points and kept their slim title hopes alive.Goals by Marlon Swaby and Damion Virgo in the 79th and 82nd minutes respectively pushed Police to 11th win from 21 games.

Liguanea which was suffering their ninth defeat of the season stayed eighth on 24 points.
At Tinson Pen, the game between home team Greenwich Town and title contenders Rockfort was not played because of the lack of security. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4:00 pm.

With their inactivity, Rockfort slipped spot to fourth on 39 points but has a game in hand and are actually in the driver’s seat.

If they win that game in hand they will join UWI on 42 points but will be in front with a superior goal difference. As it stands, Rockfort and UWI have a 24 goal difference. Greenwich Town remained fifth on 31 points.

At Cling Cling Oval, Olympic Gardens were relegated despite edging the already relegated Swallowfield 1-0 courtesy of a Bryan Levy 56th minute strike.

Olympic Gardens remained 11th on 14 points, four behind Cooreville Gardens which defeated Molyned United 1-0 in which Daniel Gilzene scored a minute from time.

In a game of academic interest, Whitfield Town and Brown’s Town played to a 1-1 draw. Horatio Parks opened the scoring for Whitfield in the 75th minute before Graeme Green level the game in the 87th minute.

Brown’s Town remained in sixth spot on 30 points, two more than seventh-placed Whitfield Town.

The league concludes on Saturday with the four title contenders all avoided each other. UWI will travel to Brown’s Town; Central Kingston host Greenwich Town; Police play Whitfield Town and Rockfort tackling Molynes United.

Off all the contenders UWI will be the only team playing away from home.
