Avril Cargill (fifth from left, back row) presented the Grizzly's Entertainment Peter Cargill Cup to Barbican after their emphatic 3-1 win over Telecom Strikers on Sunday at the Harbour View Stadium.

Defending KSAMLA Master League champions, Barbican, collected their first silverware of the 2009 season when they scored an easy 3-1 win over Telecom Strikers at the Grizzly's Mid-Season Final on Sunday at the Harbour View Stadium. Telecom were very competitive early in the first half, and drew first blood in the 14th minute after Andrew Dixon scored to put the underdogs in front 0-1. Barbican, led by some very energetic play by Denton Shedden, rallied to leveled the score 1-1 in the 20th minute on a well taken goal by midfielder Raymond Williams. In the second half, it was all Barbican as they settled down and took control of the game. The champions went ahead 2-1 in the 65th minute on a wonderful strike by Orville Howell, and Radcliff Thomas completed the score for Barbican in the 83rd minute for a well deserved cup win.. Avril Cargill, the widow of former international player and national coach, Peter Cargill, was on hand to present the attractive Grizzly's Entertainment Peter Cargill Cup to a delighted Barbican contingent.

In the 3:00 pm curtain-raiser, Zone B champions Maxfield tackle Zone C runner-up Thunderbolts in what should be a very entertaining game. The St. Catherine based Thunderbolts will depend on their leading goal scorer, David Jones (4), to spearhead their attack, while the undefeated Maxfield will rely on their experience in midfield to get he job done. Maxfield leading goal scorers are Derek Lakeman and Christopher Miller with two goals each. This will be the first meeting between Maxfield and Thunderbolt in four seasons. On Sunday in the Barbican Oval opener, Zone D winners Nautica will be strongly challenged by Zone C qualifiers, Washington Strikers, who is led by the league's leading goal scorer, Michael Tulloch. Tulloch, a former Jamaican international, won the league title last season with Barbican, and has provided inspirational leadership to Washington Strikers this season to propel them into the KSAMLA post-season. Nautica, the 2006 champions, easily topped Zone D, but will have their hands full containing a hard working opponent who upset them 1-0 last season, and seems on a mission the year.

The Grizzly's Masters League Patron, Kaye Kelly-Abrahams (left), leads Avril Cargill, the Grizzly's Entertainment admin crew, Carvel Stewart, the Chairman of Harbour View FC, and KSAMLA VP, Errol McDonald, in the greeting of Telecom Strikers. Telecom were soundly beatened 3-1 by League champions, Barbica, who gained their second lien on the Peter Cargill Cup.. In the 4:30 pm quarter-final feature game, Peter Cargill Cup champions and Zone A winners, Barbican, are favored to get the better of Lion King, the second place finisher from Zone D. After the smooth and efficient mid-season win over Telecom Strikers on Saturday, Barbican are on course to three-peat as the corporate area master league champions, and it will take a very special performance by Lion King to deny the champs a place in the semi-finals. Dean Robinson with four goals, and Rupert Nicholas with two, are the leading goal-getters for Lion Kings, while Paul Smith (4), and the in-form Denton Shedden with three goals are the leading strikers for Barbican. The last encounter between the teams in 2007 resulted in a narrow 1-0 win for Barbican.
