On Sunday, October 15, 2006, the Prime
Minister of Jamaica, The Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller officially
opened the Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum at Liberty Hall.
The product of three years of hard work, the museum is the first on
Marcus Garvey in the world; and the only Multimedia museum in
Jamaica. It features eight interactive touch screens with
information on Marcus Garvey’s life and work; a small theatre where
films on Marcus Garvey are shown; as well as an ongoing slideshow of
images of contemporary Africa.
The launch
exhibition is entitled: “Marcus Garvey: The Movement and the
Philosophy. At the touch of a finger, visitors are able to access
over three and a half hours of information on Garvey by reading,
listening to audio clips of Marcus Garvey’s speeches; viewing old
photographs and watching excerpts from films about Marcus Garvey. In
time, the museum will add more exhibitions on Self-Identity, African
Countries, Pan-Africanists/ Black Freedom Fighters, Music and Poetry
by, and inspired by Marcus Garvey, and Jamaica. Also, by next year,
artifacts will be on display, including Garvey’s walking stick,
pages from Garvey’s Blackman and New Jamaican newspapers and
currency bearing Garvey’s image.
At the museum shop,
visitors can purchase Garvey T-shirts, Garvey and Liberty Hall
posters, books and paintings. The catalogue for the launch
exhibition is also available.
