Liberty Hall Commemorates the Centenary of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah

On Sunday September 27th Liberty Hall hosted a free public lecture as part of the Kwame Nkrumah centenary celebrations. Kwame Nkrumah has been hailed “Africa’s Man of the Millennium He was the first president of Ghana, a dedicated Pan-Africanist and an avid disciple of Marcus Garvey’s teachings. The lecture, The Life and Impact of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was delivered by Professor Daniel Antwi. Professor Antwi, a Ghanaian national, is a lecturer at the United Theological College of the West Indies and is an expert in African Studies. In attendance were over 80 persons─ Jamaicans, Ghanaians, South Africans and Americans gathered to celebrate the life of Kwame Nkrumah.

The event was the collaborative effort of Liberty Hall, the African Liberation Day Committee and the Ghanaian community in Jamaica. The evening began with welcome and greeting’s delivered by the chairman, Liberty Hall’s Acting Director/Curator, Ms. Nicosia Shakes. Opening remarks came from Ms. Barbara Ellis of the Nkrumah Centenary Committee in Britain. The evening proceeded with Dr. Antwi’s enlightening lecture followed by a review panel of Dr. Michael Barnett, Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at UWI, Mona; Beverly Hamilton, Chair of the African Liberation Day Committee, and Elena Barrett, teacher and author, who reflected on her time as a Jamaican living in Ghana. The evening came to a close with questions and comments from an enthusiastic audience.
